If Simmons can play Jameson in both the old Sony Spider-Man movies from the early aughts and the current Sony-Disney collaboration, is Marvel Studios implying that the elder superhero movies are actually just alternate universes within the MCU? Firstly, Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson in a single frame? One of the greatest post-credit scenes of the MCU has to be in Iron Man when Tony Stark meets Nick Fury for the first time and tells him he's “not the only superhero in the world”. He tells him about the "Avenger Initiative," and thus starts a whole new franchise.
Past the Mysterio stuff by far the best reveal is the return of JK Simmons as J. This is a massive deal for Spider-Man fans who are all ecstatic to see Simmons reprise the role of JJJ which he also had in the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire Spider-Man era. I believe this is the first time this has ever happened in the MCU, and everyone always said that Simmons was one of the most perfectly cast comic book characters of all time. Well, now we can have Jameson in the MCU without needing to change that, if Simmons agrees to return in more than just cameo capacity for a third movie, which seems very likely to happen, given his appearance here. I was literally cheering when they showed him, as was half my theater.

The big question now, of course, is how the MCU will deal with a Spider-Man who no longer has a secret identity, and a Peter Parker whose name and face are known to the world. When Spider-Man revealed his secret identity in the comics things didn't end well, with Aunt May being lethally shot because of her relationship to Peter, and Peter sacrificing his marriage to MJ in order to save her. Needless to say, this scene has major implications for Phase 4 of the MCU. In the second post-credits scene, we see what look to be SHIELD Agents Nick Fury and Maria Hill. But the two characters transform from themselves into Skrulls, the shape-shifting alien species from Captain Marvel. It turns out that Nick Fury has enlisted Talos, the ostensible villain but actual good guy from Captain Marvel, to impersonate him on earth.
SonyThe final, final post-credits scene was perhaps not quite as crazy, but still a big deal. It’s revealed that this entire movie, Nick Fury and Maria Hill were actually shape-shifting Skrull this entire time. And Fury wasn’t just any Skrull, but he was Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, a key figure in Captain Marvel. The revelation of Peter’s identity to the entire world has some precedent in the comic books. During the Civil War run published in 2006, Spider-Man aligns himself with Iron Man in favor of the Superhuman Registration Act, which would require all superheroes to register their identities with the government. At a press conference, he takes off his mask and reveals his identity to the world.

Since those films were rebooted , Sony and Marvel had notably failed to recast Jameson, with many fans believing that Simmons’ beloved performance cast too long a shadow, and it seems they were right! Instead, Sony have made the continuity-busting decision to have the same actor play the same character in two very different movie universes.

This bold move is retconned in a later comic book that involves Peter and MJ striking a deal with Mephisto, the Lord of Hell, to undo a number of past events, including restoring Peter’s secret identity. It’s unlikely that Mephisto will show up in the MCU films, so Peter’s public identity is probably permanent. Marvel fans pretty much know what to expect from these movies at this point. There is one scene that takes places after the “splashy” credits sequence at the end of the film, and then another one if you wait all the way through the black scrolling credits. Post-credits scenes range from hugely important to goofy (Captain America’s PSAs).
Twenty-eight years later (assuming Captain Marvel takes place in 1995 and Far From Home in five-years-after-the-snap 2023), the Skrulls clearly made it, while still being pursued by the Kree. Talos, as Fury, mentions the recent appearance of Kree sleeper cells, hinting at more conflict to come. It’s hard to imagine Marvel Studios pulling off an adaptation of Secret Invasion with the Skrulls on the side of the good guys, but plenty of other arcs could build towards an Endgame-like conclusion that brings an end to the conflict.
Based on the only scene we get in Far From Home, the Daily Bugle (dot-net) is more likely an InfoWars-type video platform that Jameson created specifically to spread conspiracy theories and fake news. (Another newscaster refers to the Bugle as “controversial.”) This would be a timely leap for the character evolution of Jameson — from mere tabloid peddler, who responds to accusations of slander with lines like, “I resent that! In print, it’s libel,” to an alt-right conspiracy theorist with bona fide social-media influence.
While James Gunn is returning to direct the third "GOTG" movie, we're more interested in the latter film. Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige previously told TheWrap the film was in development. Our best guess is that Fury is probably off looking for more alien life to recruit more superheroes. Now that Captain America and Iron Man are toast, he may need some new heroes to fill their shoes. A general in the Skrull Empire, Talos' people were caught in a war with the Kree, who destroyed their home planet. Talos was reunited with his wife, Soren, and his child by the movie's end.
