He doesn't have to make a deal with the literal devil but priority number one for our dear old Spider-Man come phase 4 is going to be putting that genie back into the bottle. Tom Holland's Peter Parker is surrounded by a relatively new supporting cast--he doesn't have a Gwen Stacy, and his Mary Jane isn't actually Mary Jane at all--but some side characters are just too big to change to omit entirely. Take J. Jonah Jameson, for instance--the head honcho of the Daily Bugle, who has been a featured part of Spider-Man films of days gone by, finally gets his MCU debut here in the mid-credits scene of Far From Home. If you couldn't already tell--there are a lot of spoilers to follow, so please tread carefully. Here's what happened during the ending of Far From Home and its after-credits scenes, as well as what it could mean going forward. It calls into question every aspect of his life, from his membership in the Avengers to his remaining years in high school to his future. He's going to have to find a way around this, and perhaps more than any other teaser in the film's credits, this condition carries the most weight moving forward. That means members of the Mysterio gang are still out there, still operating in some capacity, and still out to get Spider-Man. We don't know how much we'll see of them in future films at this point, if at all, but the mid-credits sequence makes it quite clear that this isn't over. Now that Far From Home has at least uttered the word “multiverse” in the MCU, it opens up a blurry realm of possibilities.
How Will Far From Home's Mid-Credits Scene Affect Phase 4?
If you haven't seen "Captain Marvel," you may have been surprised by the reveal of the shapeshifters. Soren and Talos are two friendly skrulls who were first introduced in the March 2019 movie. Fury gets up and stretches to reveal that he's not really on a beach.
The big question now, of course, is how the MCU will deal with a Spider-Man who no longer has a secret identity, and a Peter Parker whose name and face are known to the world. When Spider-Man revealed his secret identity in the comics things didn't end well, with Aunt May being lethally shot because of her relationship to Peter, and Peter sacrificing his marriage to MJ in order to save her. Needless to say, this scene has major implications for Phase 4 of the MCU. In the second post-credits scene, we see what look to be SHIELD Agents Nick Fury and Maria Hill. But the two characters transform from themselves into Skrulls, the shape-shifting alien species from Captain Marvel. It turns out that Nick Fury has enlisted Talos, the ostensible villain but actual good guy from Captain Marvel, to impersonate him on earth.
What does it mean for Phase 4?
As the shot pulls away from Fury it is revealed that Fury is on a space station with other Skrulls. Fury then calls out to everyone within earshot…Are you ready? Far From Home marks the MCU debut of the fictional news organization, which up until this point has never been mentioned on-screen .
If Simmons can play Jameson in both the old Sony Spider-Man movies from the early aughts and the current Sony-Disney collaboration, is Marvel Studios implying that the elder superhero movies are actually just alternate universes within the MCU? Firstly, Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson in a single frame? One of the greatest post-credit scenes of the MCU has to be in Iron Man when Tony Stark meets Nick Fury for the first time and tells him he's “not the only superhero in the world”. He tells him about the "Avenger Initiative," and thus starts a whole new franchise.
Second post-credits scene: Nick Fury is a Skrull?
“I thought, if I were a grumpy, irritable man, which I am sometimes, how would I act? “And that was it.” In a way, you could argue that the return of Simmons as the ruthless media figure is a fitting inclusion; Lee can no longer make cameos in the MCU, but his proxy characters can. At the beginning of the movie, Mysterio has us believing that we’re finally getting a taste of the multiverse — not just time travel but a glimpse into the alternate realities we’ve long heard about. But by the end of the film, we come to learn that we’re as far from visiting an alternate Earth, or having an alternate-Earth inhabitant visit us, as ever. The sight of Fury in space has us thinking about the future lineup of Marvel movies and most of them are reportedly pretty cosmic.
The video then cuts to footage of Spider-Man speaking with his Stark technology glasses, E.D.I.T.H. “Bitch, please, you’ve been space,” it turns out, is not the prerequisite for dealing with all of life’s problems (and whatever’s coming in Phase 4). He tends to focus on cape-and-cowl superhero stories and horror, but is a fan of anything genre, the weirder and more experimental the better. He's still chasing the high of the bear scene in Annihilation. Fury's stint as The Man On The Wall was formally introduced and ended after an event called Original Sin, which involved Fury's conditional immortality (don't worry too much about that) finally giving up. Bucky Barnes briefly took over in his stead--though it's pretty doubtful we'll see anything like that happen in the MCU, at least in the foreseeable future.
That casting decision alone would have made this post-credits scene one for the ages – but what comes next is even worse, with Jameson playing a clip where Mysterio reveals exactly who Spider-Man really is, blaring “Peter Parker! The scene then cuts to Nick Fury sitting on a beautiful beach with his phone in hand hanging up on Talos. Fury then gets up and starts to walk away from the beach—which then begins to dissolve similarly to Mysterio’s illusions dissolving earlier in the film.
It seems that since then Fury has aligned with the Skrulls for some greater purpose, perhaps in response to Thanos’ intergalactic attack. Presumably Talos has been impersonating Nick Fury just during the events of this film and not before — though we can’t be certain. We then see Nick Fury taking the call on what looks to be a beach. But Fury is not on a well-deserved vacation — he’s just relaxing in a simulator on a massive space station. Whatever Fury is planning for the next phase of the Avengers, it will take place in space.
But in two post-credits scenes, we find out that things are not as they appear. Mysterio may be dead, but he makes sure to frame Peter for the destruction of London before he is defeated. And while Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson_ seemed to be helping and guiding Spider-Man on his European vacation, it turns out that someone has been impersonating the SHIELD agent throughout the movie. This post-credits scene casts new light on the events of the film, explaining why Nick Fury may have been so unusually gullible as to believe Beck’s claims – he literally worked for Tony Stark!
Captain Marvel established an age-old conflict between these two alien empires, which the Kree won, and made the Skrulls into refugees looking for a homeworld. Now, a quarter century later, both civilizations are on different footing that we're not fully aware of yet, but Talos' mention of that — while in disguise as Fury — suggests that they could still be enemies. That adds an important context to this reveal, one that future films will no doubt build on. Now, in addition to whatever supervillain he battles next, Peter Parker will have Jonah staring him down, trying to ruin his day and his life at every turn, and that adds a whole new level of conflict for future films. Then, because Peter Parker cannot have nice things, the bad luck follows him home and into the mid-credits scene, when his date with MJ is interrupted by a new bulletin that introduces none other than J.
The newsreader then reveals the source of this shocking information – a “controversial” news site called TheDailyBugle.net, the first look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Peter Parker’s well-known newspaper workplace. By the end of the movie, Peter and MJ are officially an item. And for their first date, Peter decides to take MJ swinging through New York. In the first post-credits scene, they land in the middle of Times Square and are about to leave when a breaking news alert plays on a massive screen. A news anchor announces that an anonymous source has leaked a video showing Mysterio’s final moments.
