Gaunt's heir deposed a king and usurped the throne, possibly alluding to the Gaunts' descendant Voldemort's attempts to overthrow wizarding Britain's government and rule it himself. Also, Gaunt's great-grandson, Henry VI, was notorious for his mental instability, which was earlier pointed out as a characteristic of the House of Gaunt, but in Henry VI's case it probably derived from his grandfather, Charles VI of France. The Gaunts also held onto Salazar Slytherin's locket for many generations.[1] It was a piece of jewellery originally owned by Salazar Slytherin that became an heirloom of his family. It was a locket of heavy gold with a serpentine S in glittering green stone inlay on the front. After descending down from Slytherin, it came into the possession of the Gaunt family.
I'm fascinated by the House of Gaunt. So here's some interesting things I've learned about them and their names.
As stated above, the Gaunts inherited their ancestor's ability to speak Parseltongue. The House of Gaunt was once a prominent, wealthy family in the wizarding world, and originated from many powerfully magical wizards and witches. The House of Gaunt was a pure-blood family descended from Cadmus Peverell and Salazar Slytherin. A few months later, Riddle returned to his manor house alone, saying he had been hoodwinked. Dumbledore suggests that either Merope believed bearing Tom's child would bind him to her and stopped using the love potion, or else she lost her ability to perform magic.

This ring was eventually turned into a Horcrux by Voldemort and destroyed by Dumbledore with Godric Gryffindor's Sword. It also contained the Resurrection Stone, one of the legendary Deathly Hallows. Upon the death of Morfin Gaunt, heir to the House of Gaunt, the male line of the Gaunt family ended.

After Hamas killed his mother, an Israeli man chooses peace over vengeance
Instead of the men and women in dark suits with earpiece wires snaking down their collar — the telltale sign that a VIP is in the room — the former president is just another defendant under the steely gaze of law enforcement. He has assumed the position of countless other defendants who awkwardly aim to occupy their hands, settle their gaze and hope for the best. It’s their needs to which the judge rightfully has been most attuned. On most days, Trump has an American flag pin affixed to his lapel, as political candidates do.

This is a typical behavioral pattern for Hermione, who only once has reported Harry for something. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, she informed Professor McGonagall that Harry had received a Firebolt broom from an anonymous donor (who she suspected was Sirius Black, then believed to be trying to murder Harry). Hermione's motivation was genuine concern over Harry's safety rather than reporting him for mischief.
A hint could have appeared in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when, using the Pensieve, Harry observes the young Snape as he is writing. Harry never notices any similarity, however, leaving us unable to make any connection via the writing style. Harry chides Hermione for claiming that the Half-Blood Prince could be a girl. While he is quite right that a royal female is a princess and not a prince, in this particular instance Hermione was more accurate. Rather, it is someone's surname, and it could therefore have applied to either a male or female. While it is true that Hermione's analysis, based on the handwriting, is deeper than Harry's, based solely on the provided name, both are working from incomplete data and do not have sufficient information to reach the truth.

Clues about Voldemort's own personality has been gleaned from studying the Gaunts, who had sunk to a low social status and lived in poverty after previous generations squandered the family fortune. Regardless, they still considered themselves superior to other wizard clans based solely on their bloodline's descent from Salazar Slytherin, and therefore expected preferential treatment. And while the Gaunts apparently felt little need to educate or cultivate themselves, the sad, pathetic (and physically unattractive) Merope secretly yearned for a better life, despite her severely limited prospects. When she fell in love with the Muggle, Tom Riddle, she magically entrapped him to escape her abusive family and abysmal life.
Rowling also may be dropping a subtle clue here that readers should look beyond the seemingly obvious. This is the first time Slytherin's locket and the Peverell ring are seen. Both will be turned into Horcruxes by Voldemort, though we do not know yet what Horcruxes are.

Dumbledore explains that they will try to determine Voldemort's intentions, based on Dumbledore's previous investigation. Dumbledore has shared all he knows with Harry; now they are embarking on guesswork and supposition. Dumbledore produces a vial containing memories from a wizard named Bob Ogden, who worked in Magical Law Enforcement. Dumbledore pours the contents into his Pensieve, and he and Harry enter. Marvolo Gaunt was in possession of a signet ring passed on from his Peverell ancestors.
It would be safe to say that the Gaunt family as a whole would be happiest to be left entirely on its own. The monumental amount of pride that the Gaunt family has in its heritage seems to have blinded it to all magical progress for an extended length of time. Anything that has happened has, of course, been tainted by contact with Muggles and is therefore unworthy. Marvolo, in particular, seems prepared to dismiss the entire magical governance structure because it does not accept his ancestry as somehow setting him above other wizards. The Gaunts and the Potters are both descended from the Peverell family.
Professor Slughorn, of course, believes Harry is among the best Potions students he has ever taught. Dumbledore's comments about memories being "guesswork" is easy to read past without thinking through what he is really saying. People's (and wizard's) memories are only as good as their own personal perception of the world around them. If they are mistaken, what they see and what Dumbledore and Harry may conclude from these Pensieve memories may also be wrong. Well, perhaps Humphrey Belcher was a fan of Muggle-style cheese fondue and wanted to provide a proper wizarding version....
John of Gaunt was a son of King Edward III of England, but as he was only the third son, he and his descendants were not expected to ascend to the throne, which they ultimately did. First, through his legitimate male descendants the Lancasters, and then through his debatably illegitimate descendants, by his long time mistress and then third wife Katherine Swynford, the Beauforts. Henry Tudor (later Henry VII)'s mother was a Beaufort, and his claim to the throne derived from her. Marvolo Gaunt was often abusive toward his daughter Merope, whose emotional trauma made it difficult for her to use magic, making others believe she was a Squib. Trump comes to court with his Secret Service detail, but when he settles into his place at the defense table, what the public is able to see in the images captured by photographers, is often just the sight of a defendant bookended by court officers.
